About Youth
Youth Finds the Chaos in Starting Over at 50
Getting older doesn't necessarily mean having life figured out.
Sharon Horgan stars in Youth, a new HBO comedy about Alex, a 50-year-old divorcee attempting to navigate dating, sex and the possibility of falling in love again while seemingly everyone in her family still needs something from her.
Alex is ready for another chapter.
The problem is that life isn't exactly giving her much room to start one.
While trying to rediscover who she is outside of her marriage, Alex is also helping care for her ailing parents and dealing with a son who technically should be grown up by now — but apparently hasn't received that particular memo.
Somewhere between being a daughter, a mother and an ex-wife, Alex is trying to make space to simply be herself.
That includes confronting what getting older means for her relationships, her sexuality and the expectations people place on women as they enter a different stage of life.
Created by Horgan, Youth finds comedy in the uncomfortable reality that turning 50 doesn't magically bring wisdom, stability or answers.
Sometimes it just gives you an entirely new collection of problems to figure out.
And for Alex, starting over might be messy, awkward and occasionally ridiculous — but it might also be exactly what she needs.
Youth premieres with two episodes Sunday, September 20 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and HBO Max, followed by new episodes Sundays through November 1. Also, stream it on Prime Video with HBO Max subscription.
