Kate Wyler has spent years trying to prevent international crises.
Season 4 gives her one that could start a war.
Keri Russell returns as Ambassador Kate Wyler in The Diplomat, as the political drama raises the stakes both inside the White House and inside two increasingly complicated marriages.
A catastrophic event destroys the fragile peace Kate helped broker between the United States and United Kingdom, forcing her into another diplomatic emergency while her relationship with husband Hal Wyler continues falling apart.
Unfortunately, Hal has created an even bigger problem.
Now serving as vice president, Hal (Rufus Sewell) has aligned himself with President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) in a secret plan involving Russia's most powerful weapon.
Their actions could push the United States toward war.
That leaves Kate in the unusual position of potentially having to stop her own husband and the president he serves.
She finds an unlikely ally in Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford), the president's husband. Kate and Todd may not particularly trust each other, but they share a problem: their spouses have formed an alliance capable of disrupting the balance of power both at home and abroad.
Season 4 turns the show's political maneuvering into something intensely personal as Kate and Hal's marriage collides with Grace and Todd's, with loyalty to country becoming increasingly difficult to separate from loyalty to family.
Kate has negotiated with world leaders, governments and adversaries.
Now she may have to negotiate around the one person who knows exactly how she thinks.
Her husband.
