Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story Takes on One of America’s Most Infamous Murder Mysteries

One of America's most notorious true-crime stories is getting the Monster treatment.

Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, the fourth installment of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan's Netflix anthology, premieres September 17 and turns its attention to the Massachusetts woman accused of brutally murdering her father and stepmother in 1892.

The series follows Lizzie Borden as the repressed daughter of a wealthy New England family, living in a home shaped by control, humiliation and cruelty. Alongside a rebellious maid, Lizzie begins imagining an escape built around freedom, power and revenge.

Then two gruesome murders change everything.

Borden was accused of killing Andrew and Abby Borden with an axe inside their Fall River home. Although she was ultimately acquitted, no one else was ever convicted of the murders, leaving the case surrounded by mystery more than a century later.

Her story became part of American folklore, helped by the infamous schoolyard rhyme about Lizzie taking an axe and giving her parents “whacks.”

The Lizzie Borden Story follows previous Monster installments centered on Jeffrey Dahmer, Erik and Lyle Menendez, and Ed Gein. This time, the anthology explores not only a famous murder case but how Lizzie Borden became a cultural figure whose name continues to fascinate true-crime audiences generations later.
