Golden Axe Brings SEGA’s Fantasy Adventure to Paramount+

The heroes of Golden Axe are back and this time they've got a rookie tagging along.

Based on SEGA's classic video game franchise, Golden Axe is a new animated action-comedy that reunites legendary warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead for another adventure through the fantasy world of Yuria.

Their enemy is also very familiar.

Death Adder, the evil giant who has terrorized Yuria throughout the games, has returned once again.

Apparently, staying dead isn't one of his strengths.

The three veteran warriors reunite to stop him, but their mission gets considerably more complicated when Hampton Squib joins the group.

Unlike his new companions, Hampton isn't a legendary warrior from the original games. He's an inexperienced, wildly underprepared adventurer created for the series whose dreams of becoming a hero are much bigger than his actual abilities.

Now the seasoned fighters have to save Yuria while somehow keeping their enthusiastic new teammate alive.

Created by Mike McMahan and Joe Chandler, the series combines sword-and-sorcery action with comedy while paying tribute to the characters, creatures and world of the original games. The voice cast includes Matthew Rhys and Danny Pudi.

The Golden Axe franchise began with SEGA's 1989 arcade game before expanding into multiple sequels and becoming a favorite of the beat-'em-up era.

Longtime players should recognize plenty from the games, but newcomers won't need to know their Ax Battler from their Death Adder to join the adventure.

All 10 episodes of Golden Axe premiere September 16 exclusively on Paramount+.
