Carrie Brings Stephen King’s Classic Nightmare Into the Social Media Age

Carrie White has always been an outsider.

Mike Flanagan reimagines Stephen King's classic novel Carrie as an eight-episode Prime Video series starring Summer H. Howell as Carrie White, a sheltered teenager whose introduction to public high school becomes increasingly terrifying.

Carrie has spent most of her life isolated at home under the watch of her fiercely protective mother, Margaret, played by Samantha Sloyan.

Then her father's sudden death changes everything.

Forced into public school for the first time, Carrie enters a world she isn't prepared for, one where cruelty no longer ends when the school bell rings.

A humiliating incident becomes a viral bullying scandal, exposing Carrie to the relentless judgment and pressure of the social media age while turning her private pain into something the entire community can see.

But something else is changing inside her.

As Carrie's emotions intensify, she begins developing mysterious telekinetic abilities she doesn't completely understand or know how to control.

Based on King's 1974 debut novel, Flanagan's adaptation expands the familiar story across eight episodes, giving more time to the people and seemingly small choices that eventually build toward one devastating night.

The story has terrified audiences for more than 50 years, most famously through Brian De Palma's 1976 film.

This time, however, Carrie is growing up in a world where humiliation can reach thousands of people instantly, and stay online forever.

Everyone knows what happens when Carrie White is pushed too far.

The question is what happens when the whole world can join in.

All eight episodes of Carrie begin streaming October 7 on Prime Video.
