For many audiences, Mull is best remembered for his unmistakably dry comedic style and roles across decades of television, including appearances in Roseanne, Arrested Development and his memorable turn as master-of-disguise Gene Parmesan.

But long before, and throughout, his acting career, Mull had another passion:

Art.

An accomplished painter, Mull spent much of his life creating work for galleries while simultaneously building a career in comedy, music and television. Rather than settling into a single identity, he seemed determined to keep finding new ways to express himself.

The documentary traces that journey from early performances in smoky folk clubs through Hollywood success and into the art world, using Mull's own words alongside memories from friends and fellow artists who knew him.

Those voices include Steve Martin, Tom Waits and David Alan Grier, among others.

The film also carries another meaningful connection to comedy history. It was directed by Bob Saget and Neil Berkeley, with Saget working on the project before his death in 2022.

More than a retrospective of a familiar television face, Who Is Martin Mull? explores a man whose curiosity kept pushing him toward something new.
