Sunrise on the Reaping Reveals Haymitch’s Hunger Games

Long before Haymitch Abernathy became Katniss Everdeen's mentor, he was a 16-year-old tribute fighting to survive the deadliest Hunger Games Panem had seen.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping takes audiences 24 years before the original Hunger Games to tell the story of young Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada.

The story begins on the morning of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.

And this year, the Capitol has changed the rules.

Instead of sending two tributes from each district, twice as many children are selected, creating an arena filled with 48 competitors fighting to be the last one alive.

Haymitch is chosen to represent District 12 and soon finds himself inside the Capitol's deadly spectacle, where survival requires more than simply staying alive.

Inside the arena, he forms an unlikely alliance with fellow tribute Maysilee Donner (Mckenna Grace) and becomes part of a group willing to challenge the Capitol's control from within the Games themselves.

Watching over everything is President Snow, played by Ralph Fiennes, decades before his confrontation with Katniss would help bring Panem to the brink of revolution.

Based on Suzanne Collins' bestselling novel, the film also stars Jesse Plemons, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning, Maya Hawke, Whitney Peak and Kelvin Harrison Jr., with Francis Lawrence returning to direct.

Fans already know Haymitch survives the arena.
