into the world of The Hunchback: Soul of Paris.
Before Quasimodo became one of literature's most recognizable characters, there may have been a real man whose life helped inspire his creation.
Now, that possibility is being brought to the screen.
The Hunchback, Soul of Paris stars Vincent Cassel in a darker, more grounded reimagining of the legendary figure from Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.
Set in 1830 Paris, the story unfolds during a period of political unrest, widespread suffering and growing tensions that threaten to tear the city apart.
At the center is Quasimodo, a reclusive, hunchbacked stonemason whose physical appearance has made him an outsider in a society quick to judge anyone who seems different.
But the city has much bigger problems.
As revolutionary tensions rise and a deadly epidemic threatens the population, Quasimodo finds himself caught in circumstances far beyond his control.
And the authorities have taken a dangerous interest in him.
Believing he possesses an unusual immunity to the disease spreading through Paris, government officials begin pursuing him in hopes of using his body to develop a potential medical treatment.
Suddenly, Quasimodo becomes a hunted man.
But amid the fear, violence and uncertainty surrounding him, he develops feelings for a dancer whose presence brings unexpected meaning into his isolated life.
When her safety is threatened, Quasimodo must decide how far he's willing to go to protect the woman he loves.
Even if saving her means risking his own life.
Directed by Jean-François Richet, known for Plane, the film takes a different approach to the familiar story, moving away from musical fantasy and toward a gritty historical drama shaped by political upheaval, fear and forbidden love.
The story also draws inspiration from a theory involving a real stonemason whom Victor Hugo may have encountered, although the connection remains speculative rather than established historical fact.
Instead of retelling the traditional story of Notre-Dame's famous bell-ringer, The Hunchback, Soul of Paris imagines the experiences of a man whose suffering, courage and humanity could have helped inspire one of literature's most enduring characters.
The world remembers Quasimodo for his appearance.
This story asks us to remember the man beneath it.
The Hunchback, Soul of Paris begins streaming exclusively on Netflix November 27, 2026.
