About The Exorcist: Martyrs
The Exorcist: Martyrs Pulls Scarlett Johansson Into a New Kind of Evil
Thirteen years ago, Detective Julie Miller stopped a serial killer.
Now someone, or something, wants her to remember him.
Scarlett Johansson stars in The Exorcist: Martyrs, a new chapter in The Exorcist universe written and directed by Mike Flanagan.
Johansson plays Julie Miller, a New York City detective who became a hero after ending the reign of Father Sunday, a satanic serial killer whose crimes terrorized the city.
Julie survived the case by burying herself in her work and attempting to leave Father Sunday behind.
Then a murdered altar boy is discovered inside a church crypt.
Written on the wall in the victim's blood is one name:
Julie Miller.
The investigation forces Julie back into the nightmare she thought ended 13 years earlier.
She turns to Father William (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a former prison chaplain who heard Father Sunday's final confession, and rookie detective Gina Restrepo (Sasha Calle) as they search for the connection between the old murders and the new killer.
What they uncover reaches considerably further back than Father Sunday.
A disturbing thread appears to connect generations of serial killers, including notorious figures such as H.H. Holmes and the Zodiac, suggesting the violence may be part of something much older and darker than any single murderer.
And the deeper Julie investigates, the more the case begins threatening her family, including her mother Mary (Diane Lane) and young son Max.
The ensemble also includes Laurence Fishburne, Scoot McNairy and Gil Bellows, with John Leguizamo portraying Father Sunday.
Flanagan's story brings the franchise into the territory of a serial-killer investigation before gradually confronting Julie with a possibility no detective training could prepare her for:
Maybe the evil connecting these killers isn't entirely human.
