About The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable

The Disciple Reveals the Story Behind Wu-Tang Clan’s Most Mysterious Album

Wu-Tang Clan created an album that sold for millions of dollars.

There's just one catch.

Almost nobody has ever heard it.

The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable tells the remarkable true story behind Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, one of the most unusual and controversial albums in hip-hop history.

But the story doesn't begin with Wu-Tang Clan.

It begins with a fan.

Tarik Azzougarh, a Dutch-Moroccan rapper and producer better known as Cilvaringz, grew up idolizing the legendary hip-hop group.

Like countless fans, he dreamed of meeting his musical heroes.

Unlike most fans, he somehow managed to become part of their inner circle.

Through years of determination, Cilvaringz developed relationships with members of Wu-Tang Clan, eventually finding a mentor in RZA, the group's legendary producer and creative mastermind.

What followed was an extraordinary musical experiment.

Together, they spent six years creating Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, a secret 31-track album designed to challenge the way people think about music in the digital age.

Instead of releasing the record through traditional stores or streaming platforms, they created one physical copy.

The album was housed inside an elaborate, handcrafted silver box and sold at auction in 2015 for a reported $2 million.

Under the original agreement, the music couldn't be commercially released until 2103.

The idea was provocative but deliberate.

At a time when millions of songs could be accessed instantly, Wu-Tang Clan wanted to challenge the notion that music had become disposable content rather than something with lasting artistic value.

The result sparked international controversy and raised questions about art, ownership, exclusivity and who gets to experience something created for the public to enjoy.

Directed by Academy Award-winning producer Joanna Natasegara in her feature directorial debut, The Disciple follows Cilvaringz's decades-long journey from devoted fan to the unlikely creative force behind one of hip-hop's most talked-about projects.

It's a story about ambition, belonging and a musical experiment that challenged the entire industry.

Cilvaringz spent years trying to become part of Wu-Tang Clan's world.

He ended up helping create an album the world still can't fully hear.

The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable begins streaming October 16 on Netflix, following its premiere at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.
