into the world of Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story.
Maria Bamford has spent decades making people laugh about things most people struggle to talk about.
Including her own life.
Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story is an intimate documentary exploring how Bamford turned vulnerability, family relationships and her experiences with mental health into one of the most distinctive voices in comedy.
Co-directed by Judd Apatow and Neil Berkeley, the film traces Bamford's journey from her childhood in Duluth, Minnesota, through discovering her love of performing in college and eventually building a career in Los Angeles.
But this isn't simply a retrospective.
The filmmakers followed Bamford for nearly four years, capturing her present-day life while looking back at the experiences that shaped both the person and the performer.
Throughout her career, Bamford has been unusually open about her mental health struggles, frequently incorporating deeply personal experiences into stand-up that can move between uncomfortable, heartbreaking and hilarious within moments.
The documentary doesn't separate those struggles from her comedy.
Instead, it explores how they're connected.
Clips from Bamford's performances are joined by reflections from fellow comedians who admire her singular approach, while the film also examines the important family relationships that influenced her life and work.
Bamford built a career by refusing to pretend the difficult parts weren't there.
Instead, she found ways to talk about them.
And somehow, she found the joke hiding inside them too.
Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story premieres October 23, 2026.
