NORM: THE TALE OF NORM MACDONALD

Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald Lets Norm Tell His Own Story

Norm Macdonald never seemed particularly interested in doing things the way everyone expected.

His documentary doesn't either.

Directed by Judd Apatow, Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald looks back at the life and career of one of comedy's most distinctive voices — a performer whose dry delivery, unpredictable punchlines and willingness to commit to a joke made him a favorite among both audiences and fellow comedians.

Macdonald became widely known during his years on Saturday Night Live, particularly behind the desk at “Weekend Update,” where his deadpan delivery turned even the simplest joke into something unmistakably Norm.

But his career extended far beyond SNL.

Through stand-up, television, film and his later interview shows, Macdonald developed a style that could be absurd, deceptively simple and occasionally impossible to predict. He also earned a reputation as a “comedian's comedian,” influencing generations of performers who admired his refusal to chase whatever happened to be popular.

Rather than relying on a traditional collection of talking-head interviews, The Tale of Norm Macdonald is built from archival footage, personal photographs and rare home videos contributed by friends and fans.

The approach allows Macdonald's own voice to guide audiences through much of his story, including the contradictions and unexpected turns that made both the comedian and the man difficult to neatly define.

Norm Macdonald spent his career taking audiences down conversational paths where they rarely knew where the joke was going.

This time, the wormhole leads through his own life.

Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald premieres on Netflix on October 16, 2026.
