In Waves Tells a Love Story That Goes Beyond the Ocean
AJ was more comfortable on a skateboard than a surfboard.
Then he met Kristen.
In Waves is an animated romantic drama based on the true story told in AJ Dungo's autobiographical graphic memoir, following two young people whose unexpected connection becomes a love that changes both their lives.
Will Sharpe voices AJ, a quiet high school student in Los Angeles who spends his days drawing, skateboarding and hanging out with friends.
Stephanie Hsu voices Kristen, an energetic surfer whose love for the ocean is a defining part of who she is.
When the two meet at a high school dance, AJ is immediately drawn to her.
There's just one problem.
He's not exactly comfortable in the water.
Kristen introduces him to surfing, sharing not only the excitement and freedom she finds in the waves but also the sport's deep historical connection to Hawaiian culture.
What begins as curiosity gradually develops into a meaningful relationship as AJ and Kristen discover how much they have to learn from one another.
As their bond grows, AJ begins using his artistic talents to capture their experiences, drawing the moments and memories that define their relationship.
But their journey isn't simply about falling in love.
Together, they face challenges that test their resilience and force them to confront what it means to live fully, appreciate the people closest to them and hold on to the moments that matter.
Directed by Phuong Mai Nguyen in her feature debut, In Waves brings Dungo's personal story to life through animation, combining the vibrant surf culture of Southern California with an intimate exploration of love, memory and the lasting impact one person can have on another.
AJ and Kristen's story begins with a chance meeting and a shared love for the ocean.
But what stays with AJ goes far beyond the waves.
Some love stories don't simply become memories. They become part of who we are.
In Waves opens in select theaters November 27, 2026, before streaming on Netflix December 11, 2026.
