Fjord Puts a Family’s Beliefs Under Scrutiny

A family moves to a quiet coastal town hoping for a new beginning.

Instead, they find themselves at the center of a community's suspicions.

Fjord stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as a Romanian-Norwegian couple raising five children in a remote village along the Norwegian coast.

The Gheorghiu family has relocated to the mother's hometown, where their traditional religious beliefs stand in contrast to the more progressive community around them.

At first, the family begins settling into its new surroundings. Their teenage children quickly form a friendship with the neighboring Halberg family, creating a connection between two households with very different ways of seeing the world.

Then allegations of abuse emerge.

Suddenly, the Gheorghius find their parenting, beliefs and private lives under intense scrutiny as authorities and members of the community begin questioning what is happening inside their home.

But determining where legitimate concern ends and prejudice begins becomes increasingly complicated.

Inspired by real events, Fjord examines a society that prides itself on tolerance and openness while asking what happens when someone's values fall outside what that society considers acceptable.

Directed by two-time Palme d'Or winner Cristian Mungiu, the film turns one family's crisis into a larger examination of culture, faith, parenting and judgment.

Everyone believes they're protecting someone.

The harder question is who gets to decide what protection looks like.
