Digger Puts Tom Cruise in Charge of Saving the World He Broke

The man who may have caused the end of the world is apparently also the guy responsible for saving it.

Tom Cruise stars as Digger Rockwell in Digger, an original film from Academy Award-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu.

And this isn't exactly the Tom Cruise audiences are used to seeing.

Cruise transforms into Digger, a blunt, larger-than-life oil baron who has become one of the most powerful men in the world.

There's just one rather significant problem:

He may have triggered a global environmental catastrophe.

With the planet facing an escalating ecological crisis and time running out, Digger suddenly finds himself on a frantic mission to prove that he's not the villain responsible for destroying everything.

He's humanity's savior.

The situation becomes desperate enough that the President of the United States, played by John Goodman, turns to Digger to somehow fix the disaster before it becomes irreversible.

That leaves the billionaire racing to solve a crisis largely of his own making while attempting to convince everyone around him, and perhaps himself, that he's the only person capable of saving the world.

Directed by Iñárritu from an original story, Digger puts Cruise into an unusually comedic and transformative role while mixing disaster, satire and a very big question about power and ego.

Digger Rockwell may be responsible for breaking the planet.

Now he has to save it before anyone has time to decide whose fault it was.

Digger arrives in theaters October 2, 2026.
