Backrooms Brings Its Endless Nightmare to HBO Max

Getting lost is scary. Getting lost somewhere that may never end is something else entirely.

A24's Backrooms makes its streaming debut on HBO Max, bringing one of the internet's most unsettling horror concepts from the big screen into homes.

The film begins when a mysterious doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom.

Store owner Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and his therapist Mary (Renate Reinsve) discover that the doorway doesn't lead to another part of the building. Instead, it opens into a bizarre dimension made up of seemingly endless interconnected rooms and hallways.

Time doesn't behave normally there.

Finding the way back isn't easy.

And Clark and Mary may not be alone.

The deeper they venture into the strange liminal world, the more terrifying the possibility becomes that something else is hiding somewhere inside it — waiting.

Directed by Kane Parsons in his feature filmmaking debut, Backrooms expands the filmmaker's viral web series, itself inspired by the internet phenomenon known as the Backrooms.

The movie became a massive theatrical success, ultimately emerging as A24's highest-grossing film worldwide, turning an internet-born horror concept into one of the studio's biggest hits.

The rooms may look empty.

That doesn't mean they are.

Backrooms begins streaming September 25 on HBO Max, followed by its HBO premiere September 26 at 8:00 p.m. ET.
