into the world of Avedon.
Richard Avedon didn't just photograph the world.
He helped change the way we see it.
Avedon is a Netflix documentary from Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard, exploring the life and extraordinary career of one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century.
For more than five decades, Richard Avedon captured some of the most recognizable faces in politics, entertainment, fashion and popular culture.
Presidents.
Hollywood legends.
International supermodels.
But Avedon's camera wasn't reserved for the famous.
He also photographed everyday people, from coal miners and laborers to drifters and strangers, bringing the same curiosity and attention to people whose faces rarely appeared in magazines or galleries.
His work helped redefine fashion photography and portraiture, moving beyond traditional posed images to capture personality, movement, emotion and the unexpected details that made his subjects human.
And in the process, his photographs didn't simply document cultural change.
They helped shape it.
Drawing on unprecedented access to Avedon's personal archives, the documentary features previously unseen photographs, behind-the-scenes footage and new interviews with people who worked closely with him.
The film explores how Avedon developed his distinctive visual style, the relationships that influenced his work and the creative vision that helped establish him as one of photography's defining figures.
But it also looks beyond the finished images.
What was happening behind the camera?
What did Avedon see in his subjects that others overlooked?
And how did one photographer's perspective help influence the visual culture we experience today?
Produced in association with the Richard Avedon Foundation, the documentary brings together Howard's storytelling with rare access to the artist's personal and professional world.
Avedon died in 2004, leaving behind an extraordinary collection of images that continue influencing photographers, designers and visual artists.
Millions of people have seen Richard Avedon's photographs.
This is an opportunity to discover the man who saw the world through the lens.
Following its premiere at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, Avedon begins streaming November 11, 2026, on Netflix.
