Artificial Takes Inside the Five Days That Shook OpenAI

Five days. One firing. And a battle over who would control one of the most important companies in artificial intelligence.

Artificial stars Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman in a biographical comedy-drama centered on the extraordinary events surrounding Altman's sudden removal as CEO of OpenAI in November 2023 and his return just days later.

Directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Saturday Night Live veteran Simon Rich, the film takes place as OpenAI finds itself near the center of a rapidly accelerating global AI race.

Then everything inside the company explodes.

Altman is abruptly fired by OpenAI's board, setting off several days of uncertainty, internal conflict and public speculation about what happened and who would ultimately control the company's future.

Less than a week later, Altman was back.

Garfield leads an ensemble portraying several recognizable figures from the world of artificial intelligence. Monica Barbaro plays former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, Yura Borisov portrays former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, Ike Barinholtz plays OpenAI co-founder Elon Musk, and Mark Rylance appears as AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton.

Rather than simply telling the story of a technology company, Artificial focuses on the personalities and power struggles surrounding a moment when questions about leadership, artificial intelligence and who should control increasingly powerful technology suddenly collided.

The technology was moving fast.

For five days, the people behind it were moving even faster.

Artificial is expected to arrive in theaters December 25, 2026, following its world premiere at the 2026 New York Film Festival.
