Watch the culture. Create around it.

Netflix is bringing more of SEGA’s biggest video games to the screen, starting with a movie adaptation of the arcade classic Crazy Taxi.

Netflix and SEGA have announced a new partnership that will bring several popular video game franchises to life through movies and television. The collaboration includes a live-action Crazy Taxi comedy, a new animated Sonic series for younger audiences, and a live-action adaptation of STRANGER THAN HEAVEN.

The projects will explore different genres, from high-speed comedy to family-friendly animation and gritty crime drama.

Crazy Taxi Is Heading to Netflix

If you spent any time playing video games in the late 1990s or early 2000s, there's a good chance you remember Crazy Taxi.

Originally released in arcades in 1999 before becoming a Dreamcast favorite, the game put players behind the wheel of a yellow taxi, racing through busy streets, launching off ramps, and doing practically anything necessary to get passengers to their destinations before time ran out.

Now, Netflix wants to bring that same chaotic energy to the big screen.

The upcoming film will be written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the writing duo behind the 2025 reboot of The Naked Gun.

Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara, who have worked on the successful Sonic movie franchise, will produce the project.

Although Netflix hasn't announced a release date or cast, the filmmakers are promising a movie that captures the outrageous spirit of the original game.

The announcement also comes as SEGA prepares to release Crazy Taxi: World Tour, a new installment in the video game franchise scheduled for 2027.

Sonic Is Getting Another Animated Series

Sonic the Hedgehog isn't slowing down anytime soon.

Netflix and SEGA are developing a new animated series featuring Sonic and his friends, but this time the adventures will be aimed at a younger audience.

The series, currently being developed by Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara, will target upper-preschool viewers while maintaining the speed, humor, and attitude that have made Sonic a recognizable character for generations.

The show is expected to feature energetic adventures, comedy, and stories centered on friendship and teamwork.

For fans looking for more Sonic adventures in the meantime, all three seasons of Sonic Prime are currently available on Netflix.

STRANGER THAN HEAVEN Is Becoming a Live-Action Movie

The third project takes Netflix and SEGA in a completely different direction.

STRANGER THAN HEAVEN, a game from RGG Studio, the developer behind the Like a Dragon and Yakuza franchises, is being developed as a live-action film.

Set in early 20th-century Japan, the story follows a foreigner who rises from poverty to become a feared yakuza figure and eventually an entertainment tycoon.

The film will explore themes of ambition, loyalty, betrayal, and the pursuit of power against the backdrop of a rapidly changing Japan.

Additional details, including the cast, director, and release date, have not been announced.

Netflix Continues Expanding Its Video Game Adaptations

The SEGA partnership is another major addition to Netflix's growing collection of video game-inspired entertainment.

The streaming service already has several adaptations in development, including Assassin's Creed, Gears of War, Minecraft, Magic: The Gathering, and Clash of Clans.

Netflix is also continuing established animated franchises, including Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, and Devil May Cry.

The new SEGA projects demonstrate how streaming platforms are increasingly looking toward video games for recognizable characters, established fan communities, and stories that can reach audiences beyond gaming.

When Will the New SEGA Projects Premiere?

Netflix has not announced premiere dates for Crazy Taxi, the new Sonic animated series, or STRANGER THAN HEAVEN.

All three projects are currently in development, with additional announcements expected as production moves forward.

For longtime SEGA fans, however, the partnership offers something to look forward to, especially for anyone who remembers spending hours racing through city streets in Crazy Taxi.

And with the creative team behind The Naked Gun handling the screenplay, this could turn out to be one of Netflix's more entertaining video game adaptations.
